How It Works

Gramext sits on your desktop as a lightweight AI layer between you and whatever you're writing in. There's no separate window to switch to and no copy-pasting your text into another tool — the actions come to you, right where your cursor already is. Click a point on the timeline below, or use the arrow on the right, to walk through exactly how selection, the global shortcut, screen capture, and custom instructions each work, from trigger to finished result.
The workflow
Four ways in, one popup out.
However you trigger it — selection, shortcut, screenshot, or a custom instruction — Gramext opens right where your text already is. Tap a step to jump straight to it.

01 — Select text
Highlight anything, and Gramext meets you there.
Select text in your email, browser, chat tool, or document. If you've turned on the automatic popup, Gramext appears right next to your selection with the actions list ready to go.
- Turn on “Open after selecting text with the mouse” and it appears the moment you release the mouse — no shortcut needed.
- Or trigger it with your shortcut once text is selected.
- Choose what it opens to: the actions list, a custom instruction box, or one specific action.
02 — Global shortcut
One shortcut opens it from anywhere.
Press your shortcut and the actions popup opens instantly, no matter which app is focused. If you already have text selected, it jumps straight to whatever you've set as the default.
- Default shortcut: Ctrl+Alt+P — fully customizable in Settings.
- Works globally, even when Gramext isn't the focused window.
- Opens to the actions list, unless you've picked a different destination for the shortcut in Settings.
03 — Screen capture
Can't select it? Capture it instead.
Some text isn't selectable — an image, a scanned PDF, a paused video frame. Capture that area instead, and Gramext reads the text for you before handing it straight to the actions popup.
- Default shortcut: Ctrl+Alt+M — drag over any area of your screen.
- Text extraction runs entirely offline — nothing is sent anywhere just to be read.
- Works on images, scanned PDFs, and paused video frames alike.
- Non-Latin scripts (Russian, Chinese, Arabic...) rely on Windows' OCR settings — add more under Settings → Time & language → Language & region.
- Translating? Set your target language in Settings → Actions — it defaults to English.
04 — Custom instructions
Turn an instruction into a reusable action.
Beyond Reply, Polish, Draft Email, Explain, and Translate, build your own action with a custom prompt. Have it produce a document instead of plain text, and it shows up in your popup right alongside the built-ins.
- Write a custom prompt template — up to 5,000 characters — like “Turn this into a formatted PDF.”
- Turn on “Generates a file” for actions that should produce a document instead of plain text.
- Pick the model, then reorder, hide, or edit it any time from Settings → Actions.
